These plastic or optical fiber cylindrical structures move light from point A to B. They are the method of communication on a wide variety of devices, such as the power button on your TV, the red recording light on a security camera or the charging meter on your EV. In other words, you use them all the time and probably didn't realize it.
At Bivar, there are two broad categories of light pipes: rigid light pipes and flexible light pipes. A nonflammable plastic, Polycarbonate, is used to manufacture the easily-molded rigid light pipes, which work best for short distances.
Optical fiber's flexibility make it ideal for longer distances, where light may be required to move around obstacles in tight spaces. Bivar's Surface Mount LEDs (SMD) and Through-Hold LEDs come in a range of sizes, colors and brightness for use in light pipes. Our ZeroLightBleed™ adaptors eliminate the light bleed that can create dimmed brightness, false readings, color mixing and unwanted enclosure glow. The right combination of a light pipe and LED allow you to maximize light travel and minimize light bleed, offering the optimal result in your design. Light pipes are relatively simple, but they play an important role in your compact design, allow you to simplify your PCB layout and solve challenges for design engineers.
